FK6193 – Computer Based Exam – HAMA

Do this test if you have drawn “HAMA” during the lucky draw.
============================================================
A clinical trial was conducted to compare the effectiveness of two anti depressants, Fluoxetine (Prozac) and Sertraline (Zoloft) for 6 weeks on 63 depressed patients. The effectiveness of both medications was measured using Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA). The higher the score, the more severe the anxiety.

The HAMA measurements were done at;

  • baseline (dhamawk0)
  • a week after treatment (dhamawk1)
  • two weeks after treatment (dhamawk2)
  • four weeks after treatment (dhamawk4)
  • six weeks after treatment (dhamawk6)

Copy and paste the appropriate tables/charts into your answer sheet (use Microsoft Word). Discuss your answers in brief.

a) The samples were divided into two treatment groups randomly. Prove that the two groups do not differ at the start of the study in terms of;
– HAMA score at baseline
– age
– sex
– race (Malay vs non-Malay)

b) Do a bivariate analysis to prove that the patients’ HAMA scores improved after 6 weeks of treatment for each Prozac & Zoloft. Are the HAMA scores lower after 6 weeks of treatment? Are the difference significant?

c) Do a bivariate analysis to compare the two treatment modes against each other, to see which had the best HAMA response after 6 weeks of treatment. Which group had the lower HAMA score? Is the difference significant?

d) Perform the appropriate analysis for GLM repeated measures on your computer using the data given to you and answer the following questions.
i. Is there a change of HAMA score over time? Use the multivariate tests.
ii. Is there a group time interaction? Is there a time trend, whether this trend exists for both groups or only certain groups? Use the multivariate test.
iii. Plot a suitable graphical plot for the above analysis, which will show the trend of the HAMA score for both groups over time.
iv. Which drug is the better drug to treat anxiety? Why?
