A study to identify factors that can cause small for gestational age (SGA) was conducted. Among the factors studied were the mothers’ body mass index (BMI). It is believed that mothers with lower BMI were of higher risk to get SGA babies.

1. Create a new variable mBMI (Mothers’ Body Mass Index) from the mothers’ HEIGHT (in metre) & WEIGHT (first trimester weight in kg). mBMI = weight in kg/(height in metre)2. Calculate the following for mBMI;

  • Mean
  • Standard deviation

2. Create a new variable OBESCLAS (Classification of Obesity) from mBMI. Use the following cutoff point;

  • <20 = Underweight
  • 20 – 24.99 = Normal
  • 25 or larger = Overweight

7. Conduct Simple Linear Regression using BIRTHWGT as the dependent variable. Try to come out with a formula that will predict the baby’s birthweight based on the mother’s BMI.

8. Download MLR.dta from http://www.palmx.org/drtamil/2018/Mei18/MLR.dta and analyse using MLR with STATA. The outcome of interest is cholesterol level. The risk factors are Age, Diet, Exercise and Socioeconomic Status. Type the preliminary main effect model (y=a+bx) in the answer box.

FK6193 – Computer Based Exam – HAMD

Do this test if you have drawn “HAMD” during the lucky draw.

A clinical trial was conducted to compare the effectiveness of two anti depressants, Fluoxetine (Prozac) and Sertraline (Zoloft) for 6 weeks on 66 depressed patients. The effectiveness of both medications was measured using Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD). The higher the score, the more severe the depression.

The HAMD measurements were done at;

  • baseline (dhamdwk0)
  • a week after treatment (dhamdwk1)
  • two weeks after treatment (dhamdwk2)
  • four weeks after treatment (dhamdwk4)
  • six weeks after treatment (dhamdwk6)

a) The samples were divided into two treatment groups randomly. Prove that the two groups do not differ at the start of the study in terms of;
– HAMD score at baseline
– age
– sex
– race (Malay vs non-Malay)

b) Do a bivariate analysis to prove that the patients’ HAMD scores improved after 6 weeks of treatment for each Prozac & Zoloft. Are the HAMD scores lower after 6 weeks of treatment? Are the difference significant?

c) Do a bivariate analysis to compare the two treatment modes against each other, to see which had the best HAMD response after 6 weeks of treatment. Which group had the lower HAMD score? Is the difference significant?

d) Perform the appropriate analysis for GLM repeated measures on your computer using the data given to you and answer the following questions.
i. Is there a change of HAMD score over time? Use the multivariate tests.
ii. Is there a group time interaction? Is there a time trend, whether this trend exists for both groups or only certain groups? Use the multivariate test.
iii. Plot a suitable graphical plot for the above analysis, which will show the trend of the HAMD score for both groups over time.
iv. Which drug is the better drug to treat depression? Why?
